Given A Second Chance - German Sanchez

When I know I’m about to jump, the dive I’m going to do, I think of my favorite verse in the Bible, which is, “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13). As I grab my towel and throw it down and start to walk to the edge to do my dive, I say this verse. Many people often ask me, “What do you say?” and that is what I tell them.

The best thing that can happen to a Mexican is to win an Olympic medal. I know this is special for all the athletes, but in Mexico, this has a different meaning. You become a superstar! Everyone is going to know who you are. But now comes the hard part, we should give a good example. I believe I have this opportunity now.

I know my parents have instilled these things in me from a young age, and I believe it is now my turn. I know, at times, I’m not fully prepared. But I know I have the right people close to me whom I know will help me. My dream would be to become like my dad, who is a pastor of a church. He is a great example for me and I would like to become like him.

My family has always been the ones who have given me this strength. They encourage me to enter into this place of faith. I know I have made mistakes in my life, but I feel like now God is giving me a second chance to change — to live my life better — and that’s what I want to do.

I want to serve; I want to give God 100 percent. I don’t want to waste it.
